How We Rate Football Betting Sites

If you’re into football and want to know the best betting sites for your footballing needs, then you’re in luck. Here at MaxFreeBets, we have looked at all top betting sites to find out which are the best for football betting – saving you a lot of work.

When we get a new partner, we put them through rigorous testing and processes to discover their strengths and weaknesses. As such, we can make sure we know what site(s) to recommend for your needs.

Moreover, all of the betting sites we have listed on our site are licensed by the UKGC and safe and secure. So, no matter what you choose, you’ll always be getting top service.

Undoubtedly, football is one of the most popular sports to bet on. Because of this, most of the top bookmakers focus a lot of attention on this sport to fight for your custom. So, most of the best bookies will be looking to offer something new, better and more appealing than their rivals.

Therefore, we need to look at all the site areas when deciding which one is best for football betting. Here are some of the factors we look at:

Safety, Security and Reputation

This is the most important factor for us. Every site we recommend has to be fully compliant and regulated by the UKGC and others, such as the Malta Gaming Authority. We also like to see that it has other trust logos attached – including IBASwhich helps settle any disputes, ESSA etc. The more, the better. No license, then we won’t feature them on our site! We also like to see a healthy number of links to responsible gambling sites such as GamStop and GamCare.

Promotions, Bonuses and Quality of Welcome Offers

We love football free bets and promotions here at MaxFreeBets – but only if it’s a good one. We expect most good betting sites to offer a decent welcome bonus – as is the norm. However, the best betting sites for football will go above and beyond the welcome offer. We will tell you the sites that have exclusive betting offers on football for you.

Top Features

A site is only as good as the features it offers. The more features, the better experience you will get as a punter. Every site can offer straightforward win bets, but the best football betting sites offer great features and alternatives. We’ll be looking out for betting sites that offer better features than the others. Most will offer standard features like cash out, Acca Insurance and In-Play betting, but we look for more – such as Bet Builder feature, enhanced odds, your bet, edit bet etc. We love it when you can tailor make your own betting experience to suit exactly what you want.

What to Expect from the Best Football Betting Sites

Like all sites out there, football betting sites all offer different things. So, it would help if you decided what is important for you to make sure you choose the good one for you.

Any bookmaker around can offer you odds and bets on the top football games. That is standard amongst all sites.

However, to make our list, they need to add the extras. The online bookmaker should also have an easy to use online betting site and, very importantly, great customer service, which should never be underrated. Finally, it needs to offer the whole football betting package.

A Variety of Football Betting Markets

Any betting site can offer WDW (WinDrawWin) odds for the Premier League, but the better sites offer even the most obscure leagues and tournaments.

They will also offer other bet types, such as next team to score, first goalscorer, red cards, penalties, both teams to score, correct score, half time/ full time… the more, the better.

Live / In-Play Betting

This has become ever more popular as it can make the game even more exciting as you watch it.

You can see how they are playing and make your bet from there… next goal scorer? You pick who you think.

The odds also change a lot, so it’s all about the timing. Most good bookies offer this – and most give you all the stats you need to know if you aren’t actually watching the game.

Live Streaming Options

This is the next step up from in-play, and they work together perfectly side by side.

Not all bookmakers offer it, but the select few offer you a chance to watch the game for free if you put a bet on it (minimum bets apply).

So, bet on the game, and you can watch it live. You can then use the in-play betting feature to make even more bets as you watch.

A Range of Betting Features

Anyone who enjoys betting will like to add some variation to their betting. The Match winner is fine, and single bets are great, but variety is key.

As such, we are looking for sites to offer different bet types and features to enhance your experience, such as cash out, partial cash out, Bet Builder, Edit Bet, and more. We will look at these features some more later in the article.

Competitive Odds

You wouldn’t go to a supermarket that offered the same product for more money – so why would you go to a betting site that offers less generous odds?

If you put a £10 bet down, it makes sense to go to the site that offers a £30 return rather than £25 for the same outcome. These vary from site to site, and some will be more generous on some games than others.

Also, look out for best odds guaranteed offers and enhanced odds that will give you better value.

Sign Up Offers and Free Bets

As stated, most betting sites will have to sign up for offers and free bets. The better they are, the better your football betting experience will be when you first get started.

If you are looking to bet on a particular game, you might find certain betting sites offering welcome offers or promos for all customers on that specific game.

You might find some offering enhanced odds – so some might offer you odds of Liverpool beating Southampton at 3/1… which is a pretty decent offer!

Just check out the maximum bet before you do – and how you get your winnings.  Also, make sure you know the codes you need to enter and enter them correctly as and when needed.

Payment Options

Not much is more annoying than wanting to spend your money and having trouble finding the right method.

The best football betting sites will give you a range of payment options, including debit cards, eWallets such as Neteller, Skrill and PayPal, as well as the chance to pay by GooglePay or ApplePay or even on the phone by Boku.

Also, the quicker the banking, the better – deposits should be immediate, and withdrawals should be as quick as possible, so you aren’t left waiting.

User Experience on Desktop and Mobile

The site must be easy to use on both desktop and mobile. While some people like to bet from their desktop, many now like to bet on the go, so the site needs to be designed or fully optimized to work perfectly on mobile.

All the same, options should be accessible, have all the same features, and be very quick and easy to navigate. Whether on desktop, mobile or tablet, making a bet on football should be fun and easy – and quick!

Football Betting App

Many sites that specialise in online football betting also have a dedicated section in their betting app for football fans. The main advantage of using an app is that it integrates seamlessly with the security options like FaceID or fingerprint readers that your mobile device or table may have.

In addition, as the app is installed on your mobile device it will integrate seamlessly with easy to use payment options like Apple Pay or Google Pay as well as numerous wallet providers.

This creates a seamless easy to use betting experience which can be enjoyed from the palm of your hand, without the need to sit in front of a desktop or laptop.

The Best Football Betting Sites for Odds

We look particularly at betting sites that offer good odds and prices for most football games and tournaments.

If you look at the live betting page of all the best bookmakers, such as Betiton or Fansbet, you will see odds for all the football matches being played at that specific time and the future ones available for you to make your bets on.

They will offer you a wide variety of odds – and generous odds as that. They will also give you all of the available in-play betting markets available to you at that time, and to help you bet, it shows all the game stats leading up to that point in the game.

You’ll get to see the score, possession, red cards, yellow cards, corners, shots, shots on targets, fouls, penalties and more.

Also, sites like BetVictor will show you the odds and prices of the upcoming matches, so you know the value well before, to make comparisons.

They’ll also offer you the odds for BTTS (both teams to score). You can also bet on the outright winner of tournaments and leagues.

The Best for Live and In-Play Betting Features

In-Play betting hasn’t been around for that long, but it has grown hugely popular since its introduction. Especially with the punters who want to watch the match and bet whilst the game is in action.

This means you can react to the game as it happens and make the most of the odds going up and dropping minute by minute.

So, if you think that all the play is going with one team… you can then use this info to bet on them being the next team to score.

You can even take a punt on which player will be the next to score if you see someone getting close. But, of course, odds change, as does the pace of the game.

Every site that we recommend as a top football betting site will offer a great in-play betting section. However, obviously, some will be better than others.

BetVictor, 888sport and Bet365 are well-known for market-leading in-play betting when it comes to football betting.

As a result, you will find on these sites, as well as several others, the home page of the sports betting site will be in-play betting, as this is where a lot of the betting action goes on – so it’s speedy and easily accessible as soon as you enter the site.

Football Live Streaming

This isn’t as common or mainstream as live betting just yet. Not all bookies offer a live streaming service.

However, some top football betting sites let their players live to stream the game and watch their bets unfold as long as they make a bet on the match beforehand.

Usually, there is a minimum bet amount to access this service, but that can be as low as a £1 bet.

Unfortunately, because there is an expensive licensing agreement, some of the newer and smaller betting sites can’t offer this service, so the ones that do are definitely worth checking out.

Paying to watch games can be very expensive, so for the cost of a small bet, it is really worth the money – and you can get a win anyway, so whatever happens – win or lose, you will get something for your money.

We’re not saying only go with a site that offers live streaming – as there are some great lesser-known and smaller, newer sites worth trying out. However, live streaming does give it an edge.

Having said that, some that don’t offer live streaming do offer live commentary – so you might not be able to see what’s happening, but you can hear all the commentary on the action as it unfolds. Great if you’re driving whilst the big match is in play.

Football Sites that  Offer the Best Features

Cash Out

Cash-out is a great feature offered by most, nearly all bookmakers on pretty much all of their bets – football or not.

This is one of the biggest areas of growth in sports and football betting. We have a section all about cash out betting – but put, it works as follows:

A bookmaker is allowing you to cut and run, taking your money before the game ends… when the game is still undecided.

So, you bet on your team, Liverpool, beating Man Utd, and they are 1-0 up. But then, it could be in the 70th minute, and Salah goes off injured.

You decide that you aren’t sure they can hold on to the lead for 20+ minutes. So, you can then cash out your bet as a winner.

However, you will only get a percentage of the win – not the full winnings. For example, if you waited for the match to end, then you could win £80. However, if you cash out before, you could get £50. The amount you get depends on how likely the win is at that stage and how early you cash out.

One of the best for cash out currently is Bet365, which is very generous. The betting company also offers an auto cash out service. So, if you make a bet but can’t monitor the whole game, you can automatically cash out if it hits certain criteria. To cash out, you need to

  • Open your bet(s)
  • Click on cash out
  • Choose between full or partial cash out

Partial Cash Out

If you aren’t sure whether to cash out or keep holding on to the bet, then many top football betting sites, such as Bet365, allow you to cash out partially. This gives you the best of both worlds.

If you have a £20 bet on Liverpool to win, and they are 1-0 up, but it’s getting tight, you can choose to cash out £10 of the bet – which means you would get back half of whatever they would offer you as your cash-out value.

E.g. Your £20 bet would give you a return of £50 – and they offer you a cash-out value of £30. If you choose to cash out partially, you can cash out £10 of the bet for £15 (half the cash-out value). You can then keep the other £10 on the bet, so if your bet comes up, you still stand to win £25.

So, your partial cash-out choice sees an overall win of £40. Obviously, if the bet loses, you will walk away with the value of your partial cash out – £15.

Bet Builder / Build-a-Bet

This one hasn’t been around for quite so long, but it’s a great feature growing in popularity, especially when it comes to football betting.

Bet Builder or Build a Bet allows you to create your own bets within a football match. So, for example, you think it’s too obvious that one team will win – and the odds aren’t great – you can add different conditions to your bet.

So, you have an initial bet of Liverpool to beat West Ham at odds of 1/3. Not too great. To get more of a return, you add to it.

  • Liverpool to score in the first 10 minutes – 3/1
  • First goal to be scored by Mane – 4/1
  • Both Teams to Score – evens

That means your £20 could earn you £1046 in profit – rather than the £6.67 profit of just a win.

The best betting sites for Bet Builder features are Bet365, William Hill and Unibet.

Edit Bet

This is a very new feature described by SBC News as a “game changer”.

It is only available by a select number of bookmakers, including Bet365. This, obviously, allows you to ‘edit’ your unsettled bet, but what does that mean?

Well, before your bet is resolved, you can choose to add selections, remove selections and even increase your stake on the bet. You can do this both pre-match in even whilst the bet is in play.

You can also decide to change a single bet to a multiple bet if you like. This means, as long as it’s unsettled, you could switch from a triple to three doubles or vice versa.

This feature is generally offered alongside cashout. However, it also works for accumulator bets – so if you have an acca where all but one match is settled, you can use that edit bet still as the whole of your bet isn’t settled.

If you use the edit bet feature, your winnings will equal the value of whatever cashout is on offer.  However, there are a few exceptions to this:

  • When you use edit bet to either add another selection of to increase your stake pre-match and the odds haven’t changed.
  • when you change the bet type and it isn’t possible to split cashout equally across all the parts of your new bet.

This is a great feature – new and exciting and puts you in total control of all of your bets – right until the bet is made.

Bet365 is known for offering a great Edit Bet feature.

Having the Best Offers and Free Bets

Undeniably, the first thing to catch anyone’s eye when looking for a new betting site for football is the welcome offer, bonuses and free bets available.

As such, the sites we have listed as being the best for football betting all offer a wealth of great promotions for new and existing players.

We have also included great sites for offering random promotions for different games as and when they happen. We do particularly like enhanced odds promos for football matches, which you can often find at Ladbrokes.

In general, Ladbrokes is very generous for football offers and free bets, both for new customers and existing customers.

If you are looking to start a new site, it’s often a good idea to look when a big game or tournament is happening, as this is where you’ll see tons of generous offers.

Champions League finals, Euro tournaments etc., are all good times to search for good football welcome offers and free bets.

What you really must do, though, is read the Terms & Conditions carefully as some aren’t as good as they seem. Also, check out the wagering requirements, maximum and minimum stakes etc.

Football Betting Sites with the Best Customer Service

There can be many reasons why things don’t go as planned. If this is the case, the site must offer a top-class customer support service.

This is a huge factor for us at MaxFreeBets, ensuring that all the sites on our top football betting sites list have good customer service. They will always have someone available to help you with any issues you may be having.

People, in general, like to see many ways to communicate with the site. Indeed, many like the option to contact with live chat, phone and email.

We always place betting sites that offer all three options higher up on our list. We especially place importance on a good and quick live chat – especially 24-hour if possible.

Some also offer the chance to contact them via social media, which is another good option. So, you can contact them using their Facebook or Twitter accounts, which is generally a handy option.

However, as this is not secure, you need to be careful what information you give here. For us, the more available it is, the better.

Different Types of Football Bets Available

According to the Telegraph, football betting has topped the bill in popularity for several years, overtaking and outranking tennis betting and even horse racing betting.

Because of how popular football betting is, you will always have plenty of betting types and options available to you.

There are always hundreds of markets to choose from across all different leagues and tournaments worldwide.

Here are some of the different types of bets to look out for:

Match Winner – This is the most common one, which most punters will opt to bet on. Who will win the game – or will it be a draw? Some sites refer to it as a Win/Draw/Win bet. The bet outcome is for 90 minutes.

Handicap Bets – This is ideal if you want to bet on a match-winner, but the outcome is too obvious that it’s not worth it. If Man City took on Norwich, the odds on Man City would be so low, it wouldn’t be worth it – and betting on Norwich would be too unlikely. So, you bet on a handicap. This might be a one or two-goal handicap. This means you can bet on Man City with a two-goal handicap, and they would have to win by three goals to be considered the winner in terms of the bet. Because of this, you get better odds, and it makes the game more exciting.

Over/Under – Here, you are betting on the number of goals rather than the winner. So, if it’s two big scoring good teams – Man City v Liverpool, you can bet on over 2.5 goals. So, no matter who scores, you win your bet as long as the 90-minute whistle scores 3 goals. It doesn’t even matter who wins. The number can vary as well – and you can bet on under. So, if you think it will be a bore draw with no one scoring, you can bet on under 0.5 goals – so no goals mean you win. Again, the number varies – and the higher (over)/lower (under) it is, the better the odds.

Both Teams to Score – Again, this is another type of bet that doesn’t rely on picking a winner – you are simply betting on whether you think both teams will score at least once in the first 90 minutes. This is a good add on a bet to match-winner… Liverpool to win and BTTS.

Draw No Bet – This is purely a 2-way bet, so the odds are lower. You pick a winner, and if they win, you win. If they lose, you lose – and if the match is a draw, the bet is cancelled, and your stake is returned.

Double Chance – This gives you the chance to bet on two outcomes at the end of the full-time 90-minute whistle. You can bet on home team win or draw, or away team win or draw etc.

First Goalscorer – Again, this is not a winner bet – you can just bet on what player you think will score the match’s first goal. This is also a good addition to a match-winner bet – Liverpool to win and Mane to score first.

Football Accumulator Bets – Here, you can bet on several games and increase the winnings. However, it would be best if you got all results correct to win. So, you can make an accumulator with 4 different bets, and to win; all the bets need to come in. These are tougher to win, but the rewards are much greater as a result. In fact, according to  goal.com, the biggest football win ever was an acca bet. A punter from Ireland placed £0.30  on a 15-fold acca with odds of 1.6 million to one – and won a hefty £500,000.

Scorecast – This is one of the most difficult bets and one for the pros. To win this, you need to correctly predict who will score the first goal and the exact score of the match. It’s a tough one to get, but because of that, the odds – and winnings – are great.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Best Football Betting Sites Around?

This very much depends on what you are after when it comes to football betting. We have listed a number that is great for football betting because of a number of factors – such as odds, promotions, in-play betting. You can then choose the one most suited to you.

How Do You make a Bet on Football?

Betting on football is really easy, which is a big part of its appeal. Pick your preferred bookmaker and open the site up. Then, simply click on the football section to see what matches are available and the odds on offer. Select the odds of your choice and they will automatically add to your betting slip. Then, decide on your stake and place a bet.

How Do Bookies Calculate the Odds on Football Matches?

There are a number of ways in which online bookmakers calculate the odds of outcomes in football matches. They look at the form the team is currently in. They also look at historical data – such as previous matches between the teams and the number of goals generally scored. Then there’s the current news – such as injuries or cards, statistics – and how much the game means to the team – what are they fighting for? After this, traders will then look at where people are betting – and they make odds more or less appealing to balance things out.

Is it Legal to Bet on Football?

Not only is it legal, but it’s also hugely popular with all sorts of people – young and old. In the UK it is completely legal, although you may find certain countries in the world where it isn’t allowed. However, unless you are planning on making bets from far-flung locations, you can rest assured that it’s safe, legal and fun.

Can I Use one of My Free Bet Promotions on a Football Accumulator?

You would need to check the terms and conditions of the bonus first, but generally, most will let you use your free bet offer on a football accumulator. So, if you do, you will get even more of a boost as the odds will be even bigger and the winnings even better. Make sure to remember that when you claim any winnings from your free bet, your stake will not be returned unlike in an ordinary bet.

Where Can I Find a Good Football Odds Checker Site?

You can look for all the best odds we have on the site here at MaxFreeBets. We will keep you updated if there is any special deal or any site is offering above market average process on top sporting events. You can also browse through the sites yourself to see what other offers and the odds they have going on.

Where Can I Find the Best Football Betting Tips?

We find that it’s not always best to go with live betting tips but to use what you know and your own experience of the game. Only bet on games you have good knowledge of and judge the game on that. You can also use what’s happening in the game and in the past games. Trust yourself more than other tipsters.

Is It a Good Idea to Cash Out a Football Bet?

This is all a personal choice. If you’re more of a risk-taker and want the whole win, then you’ll hang on until the end. However, if you aren’t sure and the result is shaky – and you’d rather win something than risk losing it all, then cash out is a good option for you. If things aren’t going your way and you may be about to lose a winning bet, then why not?

Can I Use Acca Insurance of Football Accumulator Bets?

Acca insurance basically means that if one of your acca legs falls through, then your initial stake is returned. Many big-name betting sites offer this, including 888sport and BetVictor. This is popular because accas are a higher risk bet type. You can use acca insurance on all accas – including football accas. However, you will need to fulfil certain criteria, such as having 5 or more legs to the acca bet.

Only Choosing Sites Regulated by the UKGC

Here at MaxFreeBets, we only ever recommend sites regulated by the UK Gambling Commission – according to the Business Telegraph, the UKGC “has one of the highest levels of regulation” of any governing body, so are the safest and best out there.

This means your safety is always a priority. These are the only sites that are you are okay to enjoy in the UK. If you ever come across a site that doesn’t have a logo to say that it is a UKGC licensed site, then we’d recommend you not go near it.
