Steamers & Drifters

We record the best price available across UK bookmakers on every fixture we cover, every hour. This is what moved in the last 24 hours: prices that shortened (steamers) and prices that drifted. Moves are ranked by percentage, not by decimal points, so a real shift on a short price isn't buried under noise on a 15/1 shot.

What a moving price means: that money has gone one way and bookmakers have adjusted. It is a record of the market, not a prediction — a steamer is not more likely to win because it shortened, and plenty of drifters win. Prices also move for dull reasons: a team-news leak, one large bet, or a bookmaker correcting an error.

How we measure it

Every hour we take the best price available across the UK bookmakers we compare, for each fixture kicking off in the next 48 hours, and store it. A move is the latest reading against the oldest one we hold from the previous 24 hours, expressed as a percentage of the opening price. Anything under 5% is treated as noise and left out. Because we compare the best price rather than one bookmaker's, a move here reflects the market as a whole rather than one firm trimming its own book.
