Academy members vote in a window that closes several days before the broadcast. The ballots are counted, the results are sealed, and a very small number of people know them. That is a structural feature of the market rather than a scandal, but it explains why stake limits are modest and why bookmakers watch late money on the Oscars more carefully than late money on a football match.

The BAFTAs and the Golden Globes matter too, though their voting bodies are different enough that they mislead more often.
A film that sweeps the guilds is usually a very short price by the time the Oscars arrive, and usually deserves to be. Where the guilds split, the market genuinely does not know, and those are the years where longer prices have value.
The editing guild is worth watching more closely than its profile suggests. Best Picture winners have historically tended to be films that were also nominated for editing, on the reasoning that a film the Academy considers well-constructed is a film it takes seriously overall.
Best Picture is a different kind of bet
Most categories are decided by a straightforward plurality — the most votes wins. Best Picture is not. It uses a preferential ballot, where voters rank the nominees and the count redistributes lower-ranked preferences until something passes fifty per cent.
The practical effect is that Best Picture rewards films many voters place second or third, and punishes divisive films that some voters love and others rank last. A film can lead on first preferences and still lose. This is why the Best Picture favourite is often a broadly admired consensus choice rather than the most passionately supported film of the year, and it is the single most useful thing to understand when betting the category.
It also means a Best Picture bet and a Best Director bet are not interchangeable, even though the two categories often align. Director is a plurality vote of a smaller, more specialist branch; Picture is a ranked vote of the entire membership.

- Watch the screenplay categories for signs the Academy wants to reward a film it will not give Picture to.
- Be wary of late money. The result already exists and the market knows it.
- Check tie rules. The Academy does occasionally produce them.
