It’s worth remembering Canelo Alvarez is still only 29 years old as he seems to have been around boxing forever. He made a winning debut in Mexico all the way back in 2005 when scoring a fourth-round stoppage and claimed victory in each of his first four outings. Saul suffered a fourth-round split decision draw in round five in another four rounds contest but didn’t let that disappointment spoil his surge to the top of boxing. He had an unwavering belief in his style, skill and ability to become one of the greatest fighters of the modern ere and a real pound for pound king.

Saul Alvarez’s record now reads an impressive 52 wins against one defeat and two draws. The sole loss on his card came against Floyd Mayweather Jnr earlier in his career when dropping a majority decision at this very venue back in the summer of 2013 against Pretty Boy Mayweather. The general thinking was Floyd won that contest comfortably and the decision of one judge to score the bout a 114-114 was nothing short of comical. It was defeat, but Saul came out of the night with credit and he used the result to become a better fighter. That’s something he certainly won’t get against Alvarez. Beating young and inexperienced fighters like Anthony Yarde is one thing but this represents a serious step up in class of opponent as Sergey takes on the sport’s hottest property. The main hope of Kovalev is he is too big for his naturally smaller opponent and can use that to nick an advantage. Alvarez has gone through the weights already but surely a time will come when he pushes his luck just a little too far.
