Canelo v Kovalev

Boxing sensation Saul Alvarez is back in action in the coming weeks as he faces off against hard-hitting Russian Sergey Kovalev over 12 rounds. The fight will take place at the spectacular MGM Grand in Las Vegas and we expect a sell-out audience to be in attendance for what will be a thrilling contest from the opening bell.

The pair will do battle in Sin City on 2 November 2019 and the WBO light heavyweight world title will be on the line. That’s incredible and the reason for that is Saul Alvarez has gone through the weights, winning world titles at welterweight before taking each of the higher divisions by storm. Is he about to add a light heavyweight title to his list of achievements? He’s certainly more than capable, that much is true, and the Mexican will duck between the ropes confident he has what it takes to send shockwaves through the division.

It’s unlikely Canelo will fight too many more times at this weight division, his premium category at present appear to be at light middle, but he’s here to make a statement. He wants to secure his legacy alongside fighters like Roy Jones Jnr who won world titles at a list of different weights. Those with a keen eye for the fight game expect him to do just that and the betting has Saul Alvarez are a hot favourite to live up to expectations and beat Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas.

It all Started for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Back in 2005

It’s worth remembering Canelo Alvarez is still only 29 years old as he seems to have been around boxing forever. He made a winning debut in Mexico all the way back in 2005 when scoring a fourth-round stoppage and claimed victory in each of his first four outings. Saul suffered a fourth-round split decision draw in round five in another four rounds contest but didn’t let that disappointment spoil his surge to the top of boxing. He had an unwavering belief in his style, skill and ability to become one of the greatest fighters of the modern ere and a real pound for pound king.

Saul Alvarez’s record now reads an impressive 52 wins against one defeat and two draws. The sole loss on his card came against Floyd Mayweather Jnr earlier in his career when dropping a majority decision at this very venue back in the summer of 2013 against Pretty Boy Mayweather. The general thinking was Floyd won that contest comfortably and the decision of one judge to score the bout a 114-114 was nothing short of comical. It was defeat, but Saul came out of the night with credit and he used the result to become a better fighter. It’s plain to see when watching Alvarez now, he learned an awful lot from Floyd Mayweather, especially in defence.

That came in handy when matched with old rival Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas back in 2017. That fight paired two of the greatest middleweights on the circuit at the minute and it was a match that drew in a record audience from every corner of the globe. An argument could be made for both winning the bout but, at the final bell, it was scored a draw. The cards read 118-110, 113-115, 114-114.

Kovalev is No Mere Opponent

The media may portray Sergey Kovalev as little more than an opponent in this fight and a man that is expected to hand Alvarez another mark in his win column, but that is not the case. In fact, it’s very far from being the case as the Russian is, himself, a great of modern boxing and a fighter who can be considered in the top 10 pound for pound list of any expert. He has power, boxing ability and there’s plenty left in the tank, even at the age of 36 years old.

Krusher proved it last time out when handing the first defeat to previously unbeaten Londoner Anthony Yarde in Russia. Yarde went into that contest with high hopes of being the future of the division but he ended on the wrong side of an 11th round stoppage, halted by referee Luis Pabon in the dying minutes of what had been an engrossing contest. Yarde had chances to win the fight and looked like he may nick it but seemed to punch himself out in an attempt to stop Kovalev and, from there, the writing was on the wall and there was only going to be one winner. You can’t give a man like Kovalev a second chance.

Kovalev

That’s something he certainly won’t get against Alvarez. Beating young and inexperienced fighters like Anthony Yarde is one thing but this represents a serious step up in class of opponent as Sergey takes on the sport’s hottest property. The main hope of Kovalev is he is too big for his naturally smaller opponent and can use that to nick an advantage. Alvarez has gone through the weights already but surely a time will come when he pushes his luck just a little too far.
