Battle of the Brits
This will be Billy Joe Saunders second defence of his WBO Super Middleweight title – and it will be against Martin Murray – a fellow Brit boxer. Despite Murray being the contender, this doesn’t necessarily make him a complete underdog. Indeed, Murray is already a four-time world title challenger and has lots of experience on the world stage. Will Billy Joe Saunders be able to withstand the power of Murray and keep his title? Or, will this finally be Murray’s turn in the spotlight?
Well, Saunders has been out of the ring for over a year. The controversial fighter will make his return with a big battle where he will have to pull out all the stops to keep hold of his title. Murray, of St Helens, will be looking to take advantage of Saunders absence and be hoping for a little rust to make his job a bit easier.
It was way back in May 2019 when Saunders first got his hand on the title. To do so, he managed a unanimous point win over German fighter Shefat Isufi. Since then, more than one and a half years later, he’s defended his title just once. However, this was a very decisive win – with an 11th round knockout of opponent Marcelo Esteban Coceres – in front of a big Los Angeles audience.
He’s undoubtedly a very talented fighter, having been a two-weight champion, but he isn’t necessarily the most popular and has had a very controversial history– and there are a number of people who would want to put their money and faith in a Murray win.

Betting on the Big Fight
Boxing – and all sports – has taken a back seat in 2020, so there will be a few fighters all feeling a bit rusty after having trained in their own gyms with no real competition. As such, many boxing betting fans will have a hope that this might affect the outcome and that Murray might take the win. But, where is the smart money going and why?
Billy Joe Saunders isn’t the most well-liked character in boxing – and his out of ring antics haven’t gone down well with boxing fans. Saunders dropped his WBO middleweight title after it appeared that he might well be stripped of it after failing a drug test. He has also posted a number of very controversial videos online – one even showing men how to hit women. So, women will no doubt be lining up to back Murray.
This fight is a long time in the making. In fact, they were first due to face off way back in 2018, before Saunders got the title. However, twice Saunders pulled out due to injury. This didn’t go down well with Murray as he accused Saunders of simply looking for bigger opponents.
Moreover, fans will be backing Murray in the hope of seeing him finally getting his hands on a well-deserved title. Four times over, Murray has been the challenger for a world title and has been short of the mark every time. The search for a title has been going on for nine years now. He first went for a belt back in 2011 when he took on Felix Sturm in Germany, for the WBA Super Middleweight belt. However, despite putting up a strong fight, the judges declared it a draw. The controversial decision meant Sturm kept his title.
Two years later, Murray got another shot for success when he took on Sergio Martinez for the WBC and Ring Middleweight titles in Argentina. However, the loss this time was more decisive, and he lost on points in a unanimous decision. Two years after, in 2015, he faced off with the legend that is Gennadiy Golovkin. The fight was stopped in the 11th round and Golovkin kept his three titles.
He also lost out when fighting George Groves – his fourth loss. However, since then, he fought and won Rui Manuel Pavanito. He has also been out of the ring for a year and this will be his first fight back. So, Murray goes into this as the underdog. Many, if they go with their heads, will bet on Saunders, but if your boxing strategy is to go for an underdog with a decent chance, then Murray isn’t a bad shot

Saunders v Murray Betting Analysis
As you can see by the odds, there is one man that everyone thinks will take the win – and it’s not Murray. However, Dubois beat the oddsmakers last week to come out on top – and bettors who favour the underdog strategy would have been quids in there. So, Murray can’t be ruled out – and if he did come in, then you’d be laughing.
Whether or not you like Saunders as a human being, you cannot let that blind your judgement when the facts are looking straight at you. Saunders is an amazing boxer, and everything points to a Saunders win. He has beaten some incredible boxers to earn his title, including Chris Eubank, John Ryder, Gary O’Sullivan and Willie Monroe Junior. The guy certainly knows his way around the square circle. He’s had 29 fights and has never been beaten, so it will be a tough ask for Murray. However, he is also arrogant and that can lead to mistakes – take Joshua v Ruiz Jnr for example. This is definitely a fight where heart and head are going two separate ways. Murray would be anyone’s heartfelt choice, but the head definitely says Saunders. Murray is knocking on now – at 38 years old, he is no longer in his prime.
Murray does have heart – and no one will deny that he will put his whole heart and soul into the fight. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that this will get him the win. He does have an incredible record though. He’s lost just five of his fights and won, by knockout, 35 opponents. There’s definitely power in his corner. But will he be quick enough or smart enough? The jury is out but it’s not looking good for the St Helens fighter.

Things to Consider when Betting on Saunders v Murray
This is the big 30 for Saunders – and he wants to mark it with a big win. He has made no secret that he’s been out of competitive action for a year, but he is now looking forward to fighting his 30th professional fight and see 2020 out with a bang – hopefully that of his opponent hitting the mat. He, along with other boxers, has been left frustrated by the impact of Covid on sport in 2020, especially with his fight against Canelo Alvarez falling through. However, he can finish off the year on a positive note with this one. These two fighters have a verbal history – and Saunders is looking forward to less of the words and more action, so see who can back up their talk.
Murray, however, is not showing any fear despite the odds. He believes that big fights bring out the best in him and is looking forward to trying for another world title. Unlike Saunders, Murray was more positive about 2020 – as it allowed him to focus on his family ahead of his career. He also downplays the fighting talk and has left that back in the past. However, he still thinks that there is definitely “some unfinished business”. He’s not expecting an easy fight, so he’ll go all in.
