Bet on the Greyhound Races
Written by Josh Lingenfelter
Greyhound racing has existed since 1926, beginning at Belle Vue in Manchester, and combines social entertainment with betting opportunities both at live venues and online. Like any form of racing, greyhound racing has a running track where anything can happen, much the same as horse racing.
Greyhound racing features different competitive tiers. The Greyhound Derby represents the highest category, offering significant prize money with roughly 180 greyhounds competing across six rounds. The sport also includes both Scottish and English Greyhound Derbies, plus Category 1–3 races and Open Races.
Each racing trap has a designated colour scheme for identification, running from Trap 1 in red through to Trap 8 in yellow and black, making it easy for bettors to track their selection during a race.
Successful greyhound betting requires weighing up trainer experience, the dog's weight relative to competitors, recent performance results, career win percentages, and the competitive level of previous races.
New bettors should start with straight bets — wagering on a dog to win, place (top two) or show (top three). More advanced options exist for experienced punters, including Quinellas, Perfectas and Trifectas, which offer bigger returns for correctly forecasting multiple finishing positions.
