However, horse racing lovers will be thrilled that the event is still going ahead – and that they will still be able to watch and bet on the spectacle from the comfort of your own front room.

The History of Royal Ascot

Undeniably, Royal Ascot comes with a huge amount of history and is celebrated by horse racing lovers all across the globe. It was originally founded at the beginning of the 18th century – 1711 by Queen Anne. It is considered to be the highlight of the horse racing track calendar every year.

What’s more, this is a race that the Queen attends annually – and has done so for every year of her reign. However, due to the race being held behind closed doors, she will not be attending this year. Usually, her arrival is quite the spectacle, drawing up in her horse-drawn carriage with a royal procession.

Unfortunately, the recent pandemic has hit the horse racing world hard and as such the prize money on offer over all will be £3,680,000. Whilst this is a vast sum, it is down 55% on the prize pot originally announced in December, of £8,095,000.

Royal Ascot’s Feature RaceThe biggest races of Royal Ascot are the Grade 1 contests, of which there are eight over all. However, the biggest of those is undoubtedly the Gold Cup, which they first introduced back in 1807.  What’s more, The Queen was the first-ever ruling monarch to have a winner, back in 2013, when it was won by Estimate.

The Gold Cup is run over 2m4f and it is the most prestigious of all the races. If you want to see the race, then you can find it broadcast on Thursday 18th June at 3.35pm. Moreover, two-time winner, Stradivarius will be back to try and make it a hat-trick of victories.
