Premier League Preview 29th + 30th December 2018

The Premier League festive period is well and truly underway and going into the games this weekend, some teams are having a great time while others are struggling badly. Which team is having the worst Christmas period? Well, that award certainly goes to Manchester City, who have lost three of their last four games and slipped from being top of the table to down in third and seven points behind their title rival Liverpool. Those two teams play each other next Thursday, and City simply cannot afford to lose another game before that one, otherwise, it could be curtains for their title defence, even though we are only half way through the season.

At the bottom of the league, two draws have been enough to lift Fulham from the foot of the table, and they go into this weekend one point ahead of the new bottom club, Huddersfield. The biggest game of the weekend at the bottom features those two teams, as Huddersfield travel down to London to take on Fulham. Three points for The Cottagers in that one would give them a four-point gap over The Terriers, and that would potentially be a big turning point in their season.

Big points are up for grabs once more in the Premier League, and we are sure to see more drama this weekend.

Premier League Match Previews

Liverpool vs Arsenal – Saturday 29th Dec, 5:30 pm

Liverpool are six points ahead of Tottenham and seven ahead of Manchester City after what has been a thrilling time for them. Not only have they been able to take advantage of the points dropped by Manchester City but they have been very impressive themselves. Their last two games of this period are against Arsenal and Manchester City, six points would put them in an almost unbeatable position at the top of the table.

Arsenal have struggled in recent weeks, winning just two of their last five league games and also losing to rivals Tottenham in the league cup. That comes after a huge unbeaten run and this young squad now have to find a way to regroup and turn things around. Travelling to Anfield with Liverpool playing how they are now is not what they want though, and on top of that it is defensively where Arsenal are struggling, and this Liverpool attacking line up is electric.

The way Liverpool are playing right now, it is impossible to oppose them and they take Arsenal on here at a good time. I’m strongly fancying a Liverpool win here to further enhance their title credentials.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea – Sunday 30th Dec, 12:00 pm

Crystal Palace recorded a famous away win at Manchester City just before Christmas but they were unable to back that up on Boxing Day with a win against Cardiff, a game they had to settle for one point from. That gave them four points from those two games which is still good, but six would have given them a nine-point cushion on the bottom three. Having said that, they have won two and drawn one of their last three games, and they are sure to be pleased with that.

Chelsea were another big team to lose just before Christmas, losing to Leicester but they did manage to bounce back and win on Boxing Day. They are still in the top four, but only two points ahead of their London rivals Arsenal, and that race is sure to be an interesting one, made even more interesting if Manchester United continue their resurgence.

Palace have already stunned one big team recently but their inability to put Cardiff to bed showed they do lack quality so I am backing Chelsea to go to Selhurst Park and pick up three points on Sunday.

Southampton vs Manchester City – Sunday 30th Dec, 2:15 pm

Two wins from their last three games have moved Southampton out of the relegation zone since the arrival of their new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl. Not only that, but they also have a three-point cushion over 18th placed Burnley, and things appear to be looking up for them. This won’t be easy though, the current Premier League champions are a wounded animal right now, and The Saints could feel that here.

City come here on the back of three defeats in their last four games, and for the first time in a long while they have a little bit of pressure on them to respond. We don’t often see City in this kind of situation, but there is a chance that unless they quickly turn things around, Liverpool will get away from them. They face the league leaders next Thursday and desperately need a win here to steady the ship before that game.

Depending on how they react inside the dressing room, this is either the best time to play Manchester City or the worst. We think they will react positively and they will win this one before a huge game against Liverpool.

Manchester United vs Bournemouth – Sunday 30th Dec, 4:30 pm

We are only two games in to the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reign at United but they already look like a completely different team and have recorded two wins against Cardiff and Huddersfield. Solskjaer has this game and then a trip to Newcastle remaining in the Christmas period and there is every chance that United win all four of those, something that will quickly help him get the fans on side. They have not been tested yet, but Solskjaer already appears to be having a positive impact at the club.

Bournemouth have dropped into the bottom half of the table with just two wins from their last five games, and they come here on the back of a tough 5-0 thrashing against Tottenham. Bouncing back and showing character is what is required although Old Trafford is rarely the place for a team to do that. This is going to be tough for The Cherries, and a big test of their character against a team that is on the up and gaining confidence.

This is a tough one for Bournemouth and while Manchester United have yet to really be tested since Solskjaer took over, he has his players singing off the same page if nothing else. That is enough for them to get the win here and make it three from three under their new boss.

Premier League Weekend Betting Odds

Leicester at 4/9, Tottenham at 2/5, Liverpool at 1/2 and Manchester United at 1/3 look like being the stand out teams this weekend for accumulator punters. Manchester City are likely to attract a lot of support too, but their recent form could put some people off.

Those looking for value should look towards the bottom of the table where a couple of opportunities are presented. Huddersfield cannot buy anything at the moment, and they have dropped below Fulham to the bottom of the league. Those two take each other on and Fulham are evens to deliver a hammer blow to the West Yorkshire side. Elsewhere at the bottom, this time on Sunday, Burnley are in a whole lot of trouble themselves and were thrashed by Everton on Boxing Day. West Ham head up to Turf Moor on the back of four wins from their last five and they are 5/4 to beat The Clarets on Sunday.
