Mike Tyson Is Back! A Betting Guide.

After teasing a comeback for the last 3 months, ‘The Baddest Man On The Planet’ Mike Tyson has agreed to fight  Roy Jones Jr. and come out of retirement for an eight-round boxing exhibition.

The two boxing titans are considered two of the greatest in history, making this showdown one of the most anticipated of the year!

A Fight Years in the Making

Tyson, now 54, has been training with acclaimed former Muay Thai champion and MMA coach Rafael Cordeiro, who’s been credited for getting the former Champion of the World in prime shape. In an interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Cordeiro claimed he saw his life flash before his eyes:

“…the first time, I saw his right hook – my wife, my daughters, my dog – I see everything because I thought, ‘I’m going to die here”.

A few videos released from his recent training camps have shown a reinvigorated and powerful Tyson, somewhat reminiscent of the man who dominated the boxing scene in the late 80’s.

On the other hand, the forever flamboyant Roy Jones Jr. has willingly accepted the boxing bout with a slight disadvantage in size. Having turned down a previous offer in the past estimated at a $40m payday for Jones in 2003, he went on to recently comment

“I had no intention of going back and fighting again but, for the sake of Mike Tyson, I agree to make an exception.”

Whilst Jones has won titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight during his 20-year career, Tyson has spent his boxing career fighting heavyweight giants.

Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. Stats

Tyson’s record stands at 50-6, with 44 of the 50 victories coming by way of knockout and opens as the slight favourite. Roy Jones Jr. is a former four-division World Champion sporting a 66-9 record. Judging by these stats, most bookmakers have Tyson marked as the favorite.

When asked “Why?” both legendary boxers commented on coming out of retirement to show the world that age is but a number and that they still have it:

“It’s because I can do it.” Tyson said to ESPN during a recent interview. “And I believe other people believe they can do it too. Just because we are 54, it doesn’t mean that we have to start a new career and our lives are totally over. Not when you feel as beautiful as I do, and I’m sure that other people feel the same way.”

Jones Jr. also went on to say:

“Tyson is a hell of a specimen still. Still a problem to deal with. But at the same time, life is life, you only live once. You want to know what it’s like, you go in there and see. You still got to see it.”
