England v Argentina Review

The 2019 Rugby World Cup has been dramatic, to say the least, and we’re not even out of the group stages yet. We’ve had scandals, injuries, big price upsets and a stunning run of form from the host nation that has supporters believing their team can go all the way.

Then, just as we thought we had seen it all, in swept a typhoon that forced the cancellation of several group matches at an important stage. Teams like Scotland were faced with the chance of being eliminated by the weather, while England v France was scrapped completely, organisers believing there was no need to risk it. Who would have thought we’d see Rugby World Cup matches blown away by a typhoon? Is betting on the weather part of the regular rugby betting strategies? Probably not…

England End Top of Pool C

Before the gales began to blow we saw England ease their way into the competition and they had a premature end to their Pool C phase with a record reading three wins from as many starts, the match with France entered into the history books as a draw and you can be sure that result will pop up in a few pub quiz questions in years to come.

The final tally had England as group winners on 17 points, ahead of France on 15 and Argentina on 11. The latter was in the mix until the end, as was expected, but they had their dreams crushed when ending on the losing side of a match with England played out on Saturday 5 October. It’s not often Argentina get much luck against England in this field and they weren’t holding out much hope of nailing the win needed to push themselves into the top two.

Yet to His Top Speed at the World Cup

At the full-time whistle, the scoreboard gave a predictable result of England 39-10 Argentina. That was, perhaps, a little closer than the match should have been, but there was no doubting the fact we got a deserved winner that day with the rose doing more than enough to secure the bragging rights. They were the better side over the course of the 80 minutes and, what’s more, the win was achieved without England ever hitting top speed.

That sent out a real message of intent to the rest of the competition, telling them England are ready for all comers. Bookmakers had them priced as one of the favourites heading into the competition and the prices continued to be snipped away at as the support flooded in. From what we saw against Argentina, this side will take all the stopping and it will be a real shock if they don’t, at least, reach the final two later this month. The fans know it, traders know it and an increasing number of sports bettors are beginning to realise it.

Jones Happy with How Things are Going

There were tries against Argentina for May, Daly, Youngs, Ford, Nowell and Cowan-Dickie. Farrell also chipped in with three conversions that day and the same man was good enough to add a penalty to his performance. He gave a reliable round of kicking and that will come in handy as the competition progresses to the latter stages and the opponents become more skilled and harder to break down. Argentina responded with a try from Moroni and Boffelli converted. Urdapilleta scored a penalty to help keep Argentina within touching distance of their opponents but it was a match they never looked like winning, even from early in the play.

Eddie Jones side cemented their place in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup with that win over Argentina and was great value for it too. The winning gaffer addressed the waiting press at the conclusion of play and declared himself happy, saying his side was exactly where it wanted to be. He was shrewd enough to ensure his players didn’t get carried away with the scores so far, however, telling fans the team still need to simplify their game and cut out silly errors if they are to seek perfection. He was much happier with the performance in the second half than the first as the players appeared to suffer from rustiness and fatigue during the opening exchanges.

England is 4/1 to Win the World Cup

The current outright betting at the 2019 Rugby World Cup has New Zealand as favourites and they have been since the book was opened. Bet365 offer 11/10 and that seems to be the standard in the industry at present. South Africa is next in line at 4/1 – market best price with William Hill – a price shared by England.

The latter is 4/1 with most firms, including Ladbrokes, or you can back them to reach the final at a decent 9/4 with the same firm. That’s a great bet if you do rate England’s chances but would prefer a bit more of a safety net.
