African Cup Of Nations Preview Odds and Betting Offers

Those who are regular watchers of the African Cup of Nations will note the change in date this season. We usually see the tournament played in the winter just after Christmas, but moving forward this tournament will take place in the summer. This should bring further interest as there is no club football, and it also allows more players to take part as they wouldn’t have to leave their club teams to join the action as we have seen in the past.

How to Watch the African Cup of Nations & Tournament Dates

We are in Egypt this time around, with the tournament beginning on Friday 21st June, and the final taking place on Friday, July 19th. The great news for those in the UK is that every single game will be shown by Eurosport. These will be on their TV channels, as well as on their live streaming platform, the Eurosport Player. This coverage combined with the lack of club football at the moment is sure to make this tournament one of the most popular in recent years, with many people watching.

African Cup of Nations Tournament Preview

This looks to be one of the most open tournaments we have seen in a while. We have 24 teams in the group stages to begin things, and around half of those have serious claims of winning the tournament, there are not many football events where you can say that.

As hosts and also favourites, it is worth starting with Egypt. We saw glimpses of promise from them at the World Cup last year, although overall they were a little disappointing. However, this time around they have a fully fit Mo Salah to spearhead their attack and that is going to make a huge difference. He comes here off the back of a great season with Liverpool and a Champions League win, he would love to add a national title to that with Egypt.

Senegal is up next, a team who often do well in these tournaments and one that we see in the World Cup on a regular basis. They too are led by a Liverpool forward in Sadio Mane, and just like Salah for Egypt, he is going to be key here to their chances.

Then we have a long list of African teams who are more than capable on their day, have good experience from playing in recent World Cup and if things go their way, they are certainly capable of lifting this trophy. They include teams such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Cameroon and Tunisia. All of these teams will think they have a chance of going far, and actually, that is the great thing about this year’s tournament, it looks to be so open, with many having a chance.

With a good spread of African players around Europe and in the UK, every one of the above teams has names that we will all recognise, and players who can carry their nation to victory.

Betting Odds

Outright Betting

As far as the outright betting goes, Egypt is the 7/2 favourites to lift the African Nations trophy. They are a very talented team, but having home advantage really helps here, and that is the reason why they are above many of the other teams. Senegal is the second-favourites at 9/2 and had they hosted the event then the betting would more than likely have been the other way around. There is nothing between these two in terms of quality, but having home advantage does give Egypt the edge.

Behind the front two, there will be some real value found if you can pick out the team that is going to bring their A game to the tournament. Any of these teams can win this, but they will have to be at their best to do so. Ghana, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast are in single figures, between 7/1 and 9/1, with the rest in double figures. This brings in the likes of Morocco, Algeria and Cameroon who are all 12/1, and Tunisia who are 14/1. There are many reasons to be backing these teams, they all have quality in their squads, but picking out which one to go with is not easy.

Top Goalscorer Betting’

This could well be the most popular market with those who want to have an interest in a player they like, or indeed one that plays for their club. The top goalscorer market is home to many familiar names and leading the way it will come as no surprise to see Mo Salah at the top of the list. Salah is the 5/1 favourite to score the most goals in this tournament and with many expecting Egypt to go a long way, he is likely to get quite a few opportunities.

Hi Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane is the second favourite, and again he plays on a team that is expected to go far, so will get plenty of opportunities, he is priced up at 7/1. Further down the list, you will find recognisable names such as Asamoah Gyan at 14/1, Jordan Ayew at 18/1 and Wilfried Zaha at 33/1. This is a great market if you are looking for an interest and you want to keep your eye on someone you know.
