The competition all started out in 1954 and was created to celebrate all the best performances in sports throughout the year. The very first person to receive the award was Sir Chris Chataway. He marginally beat Sir Roger Banister into second place – one race that he did just miss out on. 66 years later, the competition still goes strong, with top competitors fighting it out for the top 3 spots – and ultimately, the title.
Sports Personality of the Year 2020 Betting Odds
So, who looks set to take the title this year? Well, there are a number of names thrown into the mix, from the world of snooker, F1, football, boxing, horse racing and more. Let’s look at who is in the running and the best odds available:
As you can see, Lewis Hamilton is clearly the favourite, with snooker legend, Ronnie O’Sullivan closely behind. However, who should take home the title? Let’s take a closer look at who could – and should win.
The Contenders – Analysis
So, let’s see who is in the running and what they have done this year to deserve the highly regarded accolade.
Lewis Hamilton
First in the running – and heavy favourite this year is Forumla 1 legend in the making, Lewis Hamilton. This has been a brilliant year for the racer and he’s definitely worthy of the title this year.
This is a year that has seen Hamilton break records and make himself known as one of the all-time greats. Not only has he equalled Schumacher’s result, but he has also won the Driver’s title seven times and has won F1 races more than any other racer in history.
This certainly puts him in a strong position. The only downside with him is his controversial personality. He is not known to be the most liked sportsman about, which is something that may go against him. Having said that, based on his year, it’s difficult to argue that he shouldn’t take the crown.
Ronnie O’Sullivan
This man is already a legend in the world of snooker and is still going strong. As such, it’s not uncommon to hear the word ‘genius’ used when talking about Ronnie the Rocket. He’s still just 44 years old and has plenty of years left in the tank.
But, he’s already won the World Championship 6 times and had taken more titles than anyone. Not only does he have the skills, but he is also a people’s favourite. The snooker crowd love his maverick style and his persona and he’s definitely a favourite, so this one has the skills and the likeability factor to match.
Although he’s an outsider to Lewis Hamilton, it isn’t a foregone conclusion and he could be worth a punt at 5/1 at William Hill.
Jordan Henderson
Any footballing fan – and any Liverpool fan will know what an exceptional year that has been for the Anfield boys. What’s more, Jordan Henderson has been key to the success as captain and midfielder who takes control of the game.
Liverpool fans have been waiting for this year when they finally got to lift the Premier League title, and Henderson leads the teams and the fans to glory, in one of the most emotional wins in recent history. However, it wasn’t just a win, it was an emphatic win and Liverpool won with games in hand.
Although he is just one part of a success story – he is a key player in the story. This would definitely be a popular win for Liverpool fans.
Tyson Fury
Fury has had quite a ride in boxing. He spent quite some time struggling with mental health issues, then came back with a bang. Any Fury doubters quickly had all their doubts laid to rest when he returned to the ring against Deontay Wilder and shoed him how it was done.
This was one of his greatest victories and he’s now the holder of the Heavyweight World Title. He’s looking to take on Anthony Joshua to consolidate all the titles and be the undisputed king of heavyweight, but he has to honour a rematch with Wilder first. He is a true people’s champion and the English public love him. He even requested to be removed from the competition as he doesn’t need ‘verification or awards’.
Hollie Doyle
Hollie Doyle has been a pro horse racer for three years and she has already started breaking records. She has managed to notch up a record-breaking 135 wins out of 900 races. What’s more, GB Racing has ranked her as 5th best jockey… and this is horse racing’s highest-ever ranking achieved by a female jockey.
Because it’s horse racing, she isn’t as mainstream as some of the other contestants, but in her sport, she is definitely worthy of a spot on the shortlist. She has also been named as Sportswoman of the year 2020, a huge honour.
Stuart Broad
This name will be very well known amongst all cricket betting fans. Broad has had a phenomenal year and has been named as Wisden Cricketer of the Year. This year, Broad became the first fast bowler to 500 test wickets. The thing that makes this even more remarkable, as he hit the mark just when he was looking early retirement in the face. This has been a real turnaround for Broad and although he is rank outsider, simply making the shortlist is a great achievement for the fast bowler.
